My Old Kentucky Home

After two days of driving and spending Thursday night in the Ohio Amish Country and Friday night parked under a Hickory Nut tree in Elizabethtown, KY, we were thrilled to see the sun shinning on our old Kentucky home. We arrived Saturday around noon. We had a trip we won't soon forget, but it is always good to get back home. To our children, we hope you enjoyed keeping up with us through our pictures. To our friends, we hope we didn't bore you to much. We certainly appreciated all your comments and phone calls while we were away. We love you all.

Niagara Falls, NY

Tuesday afternoon, we arrived in Niagara Falls.

It was definitely a"wow" experience.
On Wednesday, we rode the "Maid of the Mist", went on the "Cave of the Winds Trip", and took the "Journey Behind the Falls". What an experience!!! A very wet experience, but a lot of fun.

Thursday, we are heading southwest.

Leaf Peeping

We learned that the official name for travelers like us is "Leaf Peeper". The leaves are so beautiful. Our pictures don't reveal the true beauty of the different colors on the mountains. Monday, we traveled from Maine, through New Hampshire, Vermont, and spent the night in eastern New York.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Saturday, we enjoyed sitting in the sun on the cliffs of Acadia National Park and listening to the sounds of the ocean.
By early afternoon, we realized that we were going to have to leave this most beautiful place and head home.

We drove north to Bangor, ME and found a church where we could worship on Sunday. We stayed at the Pumpkin Patch R.V. Resort.

Bar Harbor, Maine

We met this cute couple today as we started our day in Acadia National Park. There was also a third dog in the back seat. Looks like they were ready to take off.
We had a wonderful day (Friday) in the national park. It was a beautiful place. All we could say was "wow" as we drove down the Park Loop Road. The temperature dropped 20 degrees while we were there. We kept busy putting on more clothes so we could stay warm.
The Acadia National Park is located on the Atlantic Sea coast of Maine. We saw waves crashing against the high rock cliffs. There were some of the prettiest lakes I have ever seen. This lake is called Bubble Pond and it looked like it was bubbling. In some of the areas, the trees were beautiful with colors of Fall. There were so many places where we just wanted to sit and stay a while.

Kennebunkport, ME

I never thought that I would see a gas pump with a TV screen. What will be next?
Thursday, as we were exploring Kennebunkport, we happened upon President and Mrs. Bush's Summer Cottage, Walkers Point. They were home and Barbara was getting ready to read to the children down at the library.
Thursday afternoon, Rob finally had an opportunity to do some shopping. This is the home of L. L. Bean, Inc. in Freeport, Maine.

About 6 PM we arrived at Hadley's Point Campground in Bar Harbor, ME.

Plymouth, MA

Wednesday, we went through a replica of the Mayflower. It was hard to imagine all those Pilgrims on that ship.

We also saw Plymouth Rock. Now you may think that looking at a rock was not important, but when you consider what it represents (freedom) that makes it more important.

We continued on our trip and spent the night in Kennebunkport, ME at the Red Apple Campground. I do believe that was the prettiest campground that we have seen.

Cape Cod, MA

Most of our day on Tuesday, was spent driving through Cape Cod. I can certainly understand why people like to live here. It is peaceful and pretty. We went all the way to the tip of the land to a town called Provincetown. This is the place where the "Mayflower" first landed before moving on to Plymouth, MA. This photo shows Cape Cod Bay on the right and the Atlantic Ocean in the background just beyond the brown sand of the National Sea Shore.

Boston, MA

I had my first experience with riding on a Commuter Train on Monday. The KOA van took us to the train and we rode it in to Boston. Then we jumped on the Old Town Trolley and rode around town. We were allowed to get off at different stops to visit some of the attractions. We went through Pual Revere's house, the Old North Church, Little Itally and ate lunch at G'vanni's. Of course, we ate Pizza.
In the afternoon, we rode around Boston again and went to the observation tower in the Prudentual Building. We went up 50 stories and boy could we see everything in Boston. What a view. We listened to a recorded tape tour as we walked around the "Top of the Hub" and learned so much about Boston". This is the home of the Kennedy's.

When the day was over and we were back at the RV, we were tired once again and so thankful that it didn't rain, we didn't get lost, or miss the train, and we don't live in a big city.

Massachusetts

Sunday, we attended church at the Fall River church of Christ in Fall River, MA. Everyone was extremely friendly. So far we have not discovered any churches that have Sunday night services. That really feels strange to us. For lunch, we went to Al Macks Diner. I had a hamburger club sandwich. Rob had eggs, bacon, sausage, fried potatoes, french toast, and a bagel. He may begin looking like the old sailor we saw on Saturday. We are staying at the KOA in Middleboro, MA. It is still raining. The leaves of beginning to change colors. Maybe tomorrow, we will see the sun.

Rhode Island

Saturday, in spite of the rain, we continued our trip to Point Judith, RI. The waves were getting so big and the surfers were enjoying themselves. It looked very dangerous to me.
Moving on to Newport, RI , we visited "The Breakers" (the summer cottage for the Vanderbilt's). It faces the Atlantic Ocean and has 70 rooms. Not a bad summer cottage, is it? With talk of Hurricane Kyle heading toward the New England Coast, we decided to go inland for a couple of nights.

Connecticut

Friday was spent mostly driving and enjoying the view of the Hudson River. We spent the night in East Lyme, CT. The sky was filled with clouds and the rain was beginning.

Saturday, it was really raining. We visited Mystic Sea Port and checked out an old Whale ship.

No this is not Rob. This is an old sailor singing ballads and shanties (work songs). He had such a deep and loud voice. He was very nice and we enjoyed talking to him.

New York City, NY

On Wednesday, we drove to Jersey City, NJ and camped at the Liberty Harbor Marina and RV Park. We were able to see the Statue of Liberty from our campground. We were able to take a New York Tour on Thursday. We walked in Central Park, visited Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, and the World Trade Center. We drove by the Empire State Building, Times Square, RadioCity Music Hall, Greeenwich Village, Lower Manhattan, Trump Tower and the NBC, CBS, ABC, and MTV studios. After all that, we rode a ferry to Liberty/Ellis Island. I guess seeing "ground zero" and the Statue of Liberty were the most important for me, however, I enjoyed it all. We soon realized how glad we were that someone else was doing the driving. So many people in such a small place. It started raining about 30 minutes after we got back to the campground. It is still raining this morning (Friday) and is suppose to continue for several days. We are heading toward Conn. this morning.

Philadelphia, PA

Monday, we moved to a campground in West Chester, Pa. We had learned that this campground provided a tour to Phildelphia, the next day.
That meant that we did not have to drive in all the big city traffic. We saw the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence was signed. What a history lesson we had. We arrived back at the campground at 6:30. Our brains were tired and so were our feet. It was a really good tour and we had fun. We walked where George Washington walked and sat where Benjamin Franklin sat.

Hershey, PA

You could say we had the "sweetest day" at Hershey Chocolate Word. Somebody was handing us a piece of chocolate candy everywhere we went.

We purchased a bag if chocolates to enjoy on our return to Lancaster.

It was a very fun day. After returning to Lancaster, we shopped at a local market and Rob bought a Shoo-fly pie and some pumpkin bread. Before we went back to the campground, we ate supper at the "Good and Plenty Resturant". Needless to say we ate more than our recommened calories today.

Sunday we attended church in Lancaster and then on Monday morning we plan to head for Phildelphia.

Bird-In-Hand, PA

Friday, we went on a tour of the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish Country. Our tour guide was so knowledgable of the Amish people. We stopped at an Amish market and ate a "Whoopie Pie".

We had lunch at the Plain and Fancy Resturant, then watched a production of "Jacob's Choice".
We drove by so many pretty Amish homes and saw many children riding on their scooters down the road. That was a really neat sight. We saw lots of horse and buggys.

In the afternoon, we toured an Amish home and later stopped in a bakery to eat a soft pretzel.

Needless to say, we have had a wonderful good (as the Amish say) time today.

Ohiopyle Falls, PA

Thursday Morning we visited "Fallingwater", another house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was amazing. The house was built on a waterfall. It was amazing.

We also walked along the Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle State Park.

The Falls were so pretty and restful.
After eating lunch we headed east to Lancaster, Pa and arrived at Roamers Campground at 6:30 PM. Finally we have TV and Wifi.

Kentuck Knob, PA

Wednesday, we traveled to Chalk Hill, PA and toured a home designed by the famous architect Frank Loyd Wright during the depression years. It was built on top of a mountain that was called Kentuck Knob.

We went to church at Uniontown, PA and then settled in at the Ohiopyle State Park Campground. We felt like we had spent the night out in the big woods. No TV and no Wifi again.

Burnsville Lake, WV

We left home Tuesday at 8:30 am and 500 miles down the road we stopped at Burnsville Lake Campground in West Virginia. It was a sleepy little campground. I mean no TV or Wifi, so we went to sleep early. Before going to sleep, we went for a walk and saw eight deer standing under an appletree about 100 ft. from our RV. They were enjoying their dinner of fresh apples. The mountains in WV are so pretty. Still only green leaves.

On the Road Again

Rob says it't time to hit the road again. The kids think we should have a blog, so they can keep up with us. We plan to begin our adventure on Tuesday.
