Texas Panhandle Plains

Tuesday, we pulled out of the Lighthouse Campground in  Melissa, TX at 7 AM unto Hwy 380 West.  Rob kept thinking that the RV wasn't driving just right and made several stops to check things out.  When we got to Denton, TX, we missed our turn and ended up on I-35.  Soon after, a truck driver pulled up beside us, honked his horn, and motioned behind us.  We pulled over wondering what we would find.  Finally, Rob noticed the wheels on the Jeep were not pointed straight ahead.  The steering wheel had gotten locked in a wrong position, meaning we were draging the Jeep along like an unrully child.  After a little correction we got back on the road and things were going much better.  We found our way back to Hwy 380 and headed west.

What a blessing, that we got on the wrong road and the truck driver noticed our problem.

We drove through several one horse towns until we arrived at Post, TX named for its founder C.W. Post, the cereal manufacturer.  Turning south we drove Hwy 669 to Gail, TX which was at the edge of Texas High Plains called Llano Estacado.  This is the southern part of the Great Plains of the U.S.  It was such a flat land, it seemed like we could see for miles.  After crossing the Texas/New Mexico border near Hobbs, NM, the land was what I would describe as sandy and lumpy covered with little bushes and oil wells.  Rob said he thought you could count 100 oil wells in one direction.

We arrived at Artisia, NM around  5 PM (mountain time).  We drove close to 550 miles.  We are half way between Roswell and Carlsbad, NM.
